lifetime-winner

Despite modern technology and the latest equipment, the real burden of safely transporting an oversize, heavy load on the highway rests with the driver of the outfit. He or she is responsible for the complete operation.

The ability to drive a very heavy vehicle to an extremely high standard is only part of the range of skills required. Keeping calm under pressure, making judgements whether to proceed or stop at certain points are equally important.

This year’s recipient of our award has recently retired after nearly five decades of service to the heavy transport and construction plant sector. With an unblemished record, he is held in very high regard by many of his colleagues within the industry.

A native of South Wales, Graham Hillman – formerly senior driver of the Walters Group – has probably transported more CAT Triple 7 dumpers and large excavators around the Valleys than anybody else on the planet. His wisdom and experience is legendary. If unsure about something to do with moving heavy plant (anywhere in the UK) give ‘Boss Man’ a call – he will know the answer. The only thing we are not sure about – is he really retired, or just having a short break?

Sadly Graham was unable to attend on the evening – though in his honour Dai Hawkes, Smiths Heavy Haulage collected the award on Graham’s behalf.
